Join us on November 29 for this international day of giving!

Show your support for the animal ambassadors at the Living Coast Discovery Center.

Together, we can continue to inspire the community to connect with and care for our coastal environment.

This Giving Tuesday, our goal is to raise $10,000 for the Living Coast animal ambassadors to support their daily care
including feedings, exhibit cleaning, enrichment, and more.

Emerald, the Atlantic Sea Turtle

Emerald is a boat strike survivor from the Florida coast. The Living Coast became her forever home in October of this year. She is currently being outfitted for a wetsuit to help with her buoyancy issues. Emerald, like Sapphire, our long-time resident Loggerhead sea turtle, will receive treatment to help improve her buoyancy issues to help her navigate her new home. Did you know that all sea turtles found in U.S. waters are currently threatened with extinction? Our sea turtles act as ambassadors for their wild counterparts to help educate the community about their importance.

A gift of just $34 can purchase the hoses needed to clean Emerald’s exhibit.

Denver, the Burrowing Owl

Denver is a 7-year-old male Burrowing Owl. Burrowing Owls are typically found in open, dry grasslands, agricultural lands, and desert habitats. Like most of the birds at the Living Coast, Denver is not able to be released back into the wild due to being raised under human care during the early part of his life. He currently resides behind the scenes due to the Avian Flu, a near-fatal virus that has reached San Diego, and the Living Coast is taking strict measures to keep our flock healthy. Denver has only interacted with our animal care team, and he now requires more one on one time for stimulation since he is not interacting with the public.

A gift of just $19 can purchase the scale needed to weigh out Denver’s food.

Pacific Spiny Lumpsuckers

Quite possibly the cutest creatures in the sea. Pacific Spiny Lumpsuckers are round, pinball-like fish with modified pelvic fins that allow them to stick to kelp and rocks. They are usually fed a mixture of finely chopped squid, shrimp, clams, and fish, as well as small krill and mysid shrimp. Our female Pacific Spiny Lumpsuckers are currently expecting at the Living Coast! They are gravid, heavy with eggs, and will have an unknown number of offspring.

A gift of just $52 can purchase the cleaning supplies needed to continue to keep the Lumpsucker’s home in the best shape.
