Adaptation Adventures
Week 3 (June 23-27), Week 6 (July 28-August 1)
Scientists and researchers have drawn inspiration from nature to design numerous remarkable tools and machines. In this camp, we’ll explore the nature-inspired inventions of biomimicry and work on creating our own innovative designs. Get ready to discover what dwells in the San Diego Bay by getting up close and personal with some excellent animal ambassadors!
Please complete the Chula Vista Water Sports Waiver and email it to education@thelivingcoast.org before the start of camp. Please send it with the subject line “Wildlife Camps Water Sports Waiver”.
During camp, we will:
Day 1:
- Learn about animal adaptations to survive.
- Meet a Living Coast animal ambassador.
- Make a craft.
Day 2:
- Play watersports on San Diego Bay.
- Meet a Living Coast animal ambassador.
- Use microscopes to observe fungi and other organisms.
Day 3:
- Participate in an animal feeding.
- Explore the trails.
- Make a craft.
Day 4:
- Play watersports on San Diego Bay.
- Have a scavenger hunt.
- Meet a Living Coast animal ambassador.
Day 5:
- Participate in an animal feeding.
- Conduct a beach clean up.
- Work on adaptation inspired inventions.
Ground all Around
Week 2 (June 16-20), Week 5 (July 21-25)
Dig into sustainability with the Living Coast! In this adventure-filled camp, students will learn about the various elements of sustainability, horticulture, and water conservation in San Diego County. They’ll have the opportunity to learn Living Coast sustainability practices firsthand and enjoy up-close animal encounters.
All camp schedules and activities are subject to change based off organizational and animal needs.
During Camp, we will:
Day 1:
- Meet an animal.
- Learn about horticulture.
- Make a craft.
Day 2:
- Go on a field trip to Otay Valley Regional Park.
- Learn about watershed ecology.
- Meet a Living Coast animal ambassador.
Day 3:
- Learn all about composting.
- Have an awesome animal encounter.
- Make a craft with compost.
Day 4:
- Go on a field trip to the Water Conservation Garden.
- Meet an animal.
- Learn about water preservation.
Day 5:
- Learn about the 6 R’s of sustainability.
- Meet an animal ambassador.
- Participate in a beach cleanup.
Trek the Trails
Week 1 (June 9-13), Week 4 (June 30-July 3), Week 7 (August 4-8)
Explore the diverse ecosystems of San Diego County with the Living Coast Discovery Center! Throughout the week, campers will walk local trails, discovering native plants and animals while learning about the importance of our local habitats. Through hands-on experiences, animal encounters, and citizen science activities, campers will connect with nature and develop a deeper understanding of the environment.
During Camp, we will:
Day 1:
- Learn about our coastal sage scrub habitat.
- Work on an origami craft.
- Meet an animal.
Day 2:
- Go on a field trip to Otay Lakes County Park.
- Learn about the chaparral ecosystem.
- Meet a Living Coast animal ambassador.
Day 3:
- Learn about coastal ecosystems.
- Participate in an animal feeding.
- Observe plankton and brine shrimp under a microscope.
Day 4:
- Go on a field trip to the Tijuana Estuary.
- Meet a reptile.
- Discover the importance of wetlands and our local watershed.
Day 5:
- Learn about riparian ecosystems.
- Go on a beach cleanup.
- Meet an animal ambassador.
