Proper footwear provides additional support for the feet and ankles\, making it easier for you to keep a good pace even while we are moving uphill on a steep path. Be sure to bring enough water since this will be a 2-3 hour hike. Proper equipment to protect your from the sun is recommended. \nPlease see below for more information on the site location and details. \nMeeting Location: We will meet just north of the Mt San Miguel Park parking lot located at 2335 Paseo Veracruz\, Chula Vista\, CA 91914. We will meet at the far end of the parking lot next to the dog park. \nDriving directions: Take 125 south to the Paradise Valley Road exit. Turn right onto Elkelton Place\, then right onto Paradise Valley Road. After approximately .5 mile\, turn left onto S Worthington Street. Continue as S Worthington Street turns into Sweetwater Road. Turn left onto Bonita Road\, then take the next left onto San Miguel Road. Follow San Miguel Road for approximately .9 miles\, then turn right onto Proctor Valley Road. Follow Proctor Valley Road for approximately .5 miles then turn left onto San Miguel Ranch Road. Continue as San Miguel Ranch Road turns into Mt Miguel Road\, then turn left onto Paseo Veracruz. Enter the parking lot for Mt San Miguel Park and make the first right. \nSuggested parking: This locations parking lot is part of the Mt San Miguel Park\, and has limited parking for the area. This lot is located at 2335 Paseo Veracruz\, Chula Vista\, CA 91914 \nNearest Trailhead and Restrooms to meeting location: The nearest restrooms are located at Mt San Miguel Park center of the baseball fields. Located along the International Border (thus the park’s namesake)\, this state park is home to least terns\, rails\, and a wide array of butterfly species. If you’ve ever wondered what the landscape looks like for habitats at sea level that are often under the water during high tides\, this is a great opportunity to find out. You’ll also have the chance to see unique caster bean plants and other surprising wildlife. \nDate: April 17\, 2022\nCheck in time: 8:30 am\nHike start: 9:00 am\nDuration: 1-2 hours \nHiking level: EASY \nPlease see below for information on the site location and details. \nMeeting Location: State Park sign at entrance to trail \nParking lot address: Paid parking ($7) is available on select days. Free parking is located directly at the entrance to the state park in a dirt lot on the left past Saturn Blvd. \nDriving Directions: From I-5 S\, exit Dairy Mart Rd on right. Continue down Dairy Mart Rd for 1.2 miles (drive cautiously- this road has horse traffic and they do spook. Be cautious of horses and riders). Turn right onto Monument Rd for 2.2 miles. The dirt parking lot will be on your left. \nTrailhead Location: Trail program will start at Border Field State Park sign. \nRestrooms and Water: Portable restrooms available. No water stations\, please plan accordingly. \nProgram Time(s): 8:30 AM check-in\, 9:00 AM start. Hike will last 1.5 – 2 hours. \nHike Length: 2.5 miles (loop) at sea level. Hike goes through sandy and sometimes muddy terrain\, please wear appropriate footwear. \nRecommended Gear: Water pack / bottle\, hiking poles (if desired)\, hiking shoes with proper grip \nMasks are required for unvaccinated guests. A patch of nature located within the confines of a neighborhood\, Church Canyon is a great example of how visiting nature can be as easy as walking into our own backyards. With water and geologic features\, we’ll discuss the history of the canyon and how we know this based on what we’re seeing. Depending on the time of year\, we might even get a chance to witness the chalk dudleya sprouting its protective blossoms. \nDate: April 2\, 2022\nCheck in time: 8:00 am\nHike start: 8:30 am\nDuration: 1-2 hours \nHiking level: MODERATE \nPlease see below for information on the site location and details. \nMeeting Location: Camino del Rey trail entrance\, located west of Via Mar Azul (please refer to map below). Trail head located south of homes. \nDriving Directions: From I-805 S\, exit E Orange Ave / Olympic Pkwy (Exit 4) and turn left onto Olympic Parkway / E Orange Ave. Continue for 2 miles\, then turn left onto Heritage Rd. Continue for ½ a mile onto Paseo Ranchero\, then turn left onto Camino Del Ray. Trail head will be on your left. \nSuggested Parking: Street parking in neighborhood available on Camino del Rey. Please carpool if possible. Due to parking within neighborhood\, please be respectful and use open areas first before parking in front of homes. \nTrailhead Location: .2 miles NorthWest of parking lot on left \nRestrooms and Water: No restrooms or water stations\, please plan accordingly. \nHike Length: 2.5 miles (loop) with 900 ft elevation gain. Summit at 1.3 mile mark. Although it is a shorter hike\, the inclines are steeper and the trails are 1.5 persons in width. \nRecommended Gear: Water pack / bottle\, hiking poles (if desired)\, long pants / tall socks preferred\, hiking shoes with proper support \nMasks are required for unvaccinated guests. In addition to the usual playground and picnic areas to enjoy\, there are some nice views to be gained by hiking to the top of a small hill on the southeastern edge of the park. \nMeeting Location: We will meet in front of the Ranger Station at Otay Lakes County Park located at 2270 Wueste Road\, Chula Vista\, CA 91915. See attached map! Look for the large flag with the Trail to Bay Challenge logo! \nDriving directions: Take 805 South to the Olympic Parkway exit. Head east on Olympic Parkway and continue for approximately 6.8 miles. Turn right onto Wueste Road and continue for approximately 2.2 miles to Otay Lakes County Park. \nSuggested parking: Parking is available within the county park. You will need to purchase a parking permit for $3 at the machine as you enter\, and park in the upper parking lot. There is additional parking available on the street at no cost as well as parking at the Otay Lakes Boating Ramp. If you park on the street or by the boating dock\, you will need to walk the rest of the way to join the group. \nNearest Trail head and Restrooms to meeting location: Restrooms are located near the Ranger Station in the center of the park. The trailhead is straight ahead from the restrooms. \nHike lengths: This locations hike has various options dependent on the group’s comfortability. There are options to take a longer 2.7 mile hike or a shorter 1 mile hike. Turn right onto Elkelton Place\, then right onto Paradise Valley Road. After approximately .5 mile\, turn left onto S Worthington Street. Continue as S Worthington Street turns into Sweetwater Road. Turn left onto Bonita Road\, then take the next left onto San Miguel Road. Follow San Miguel Road for approximately .9 miles\, then turn right onto Proctor Valley Road. Follow Proctor Valley Road for approximately .5 miles then turn left onto San Miguel Ranch Road. Continue as San Miguel Ranch Road turns into Mt Miguel Road\, then turn left onto Paseo Veracruz. In approximately .4 mile the entrance to Rice Canyon Open Space Preserve will be on the right. \nSuggested parking: This park offers a dirt/gravel lot with limited spaces. This lot is located at 1242 Cima Del Rey\, Chula Vista\, CA 91910 \nNearest Trailhead and Restrooms to meeting location: Unfortunately this location does not offer restrooms so guests should plan accordingly.
