The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve is a marsh land located in the most southwestern part of the United States. The flat trail takes you through the reserve and along the Imperial Beach coastline\, with the Mexican border in the background. Help us look for local bird species and contribute to the 2024 Border BioBlitz as we encounter other native wildlife and plants in this unique and endangered ecosystem. \n \nDate: May 12th\, 2024\nCheck-in time: 9:00 AM\nDuration: 2 hours \n  \nMeeting Location: We will be meeting outside the Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center at 301 Caspian Wy\, Imperial Beach\, CA 91932. \nDriving directions: Follow I-5 S to Coronado Ave in San Diego. Turn right onto Coronado Ave. Continue onto Imperial Beach Blvd. Turn left onto 3rd St. 3rd St turns left and becomes Caspian Way. We will meet next to the Pepper Park parking lot on the grassy area next to the restrooms and boat launching ramp. Look for the Living Coast Canopy! \nDriving directions: Take the Bay Marina Dr. (Mile of Cars Way) exit in National City and head west. At the stoplight\, turn left onto Marina Way. Follow Marina Way until it turns into W 32 St. then turn left onto Tidelands Ave. Parking is available in the parking lot next to Pepper Park. \nSuggested parking: Parking is available at the Pepper Park Parking Lot. \nRestrooms and Water: There are park restrooms available at this location. \nProgram Supplies: Buckets\, trash bags\, gloves\, safety vests\, and grabbers will be provided. SUMMARY:Trail to Bay: Grasslands Loop Bat Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening hike as we explore the Grasslands loop trail and search for local bat species! Located within the Mission Trails Regional Park\, this trail showcases the native wildlife that can be found in the diverse grasslands habitat here in San Diego County. We will have the opportunity to search for traces of wildlife and enjoy the view of the Kwaay Paay Mountain peak at sunset. \n \nDate: Saturday\, April 6\nCheck-in time: 6:45 PM\nDuration: 2 hours \nMeeting Location: We will meet at the gate on the west side of the lot (near the trash and recycling bins). Parking lot address: Bushy Hill Dr\, Santee\, CA 92071\, at the transect of Bushy Hill Dr. and Father Junipero Serra Trail. The trailhead will be .3 miles Northwest of the parking lot on the left. \nDriving directions: From CA-125 N\, exit onto Mission Gorge Rd on the left. Continue down Mission Gorge Road for 1.7 miles\, then take a slight right onto Father Junipero Serra Trail. The lot will be on the left. \nSuggested parking: There is parking on the main dirt lot on Bushy Hill Dr. Some street parking will be available on Father Junipero Serra Trail before you enter the Campground gates (these gates will close at 7:00 PM). \nRestrooms and Water: No restrooms or water stations\, please plan accordingly. \nHike lengths: 1.9 miles (loop) with minimal elevation gain. \nProgram Supplies: Water\, hiking poles (if desired)\, and hiking shoes with proper support. Living Coast staff will be wearing headlamps\, but bringing a flashlight is highly recommended. \nHiking level: Easy \nNo pets will be allowed on the hike.

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the Otay Lakes County Park hiking trail! We will see the Otay Lakes Reservoir from various viewpoints and learn about the native plants and animals thriving in this protected space. In addition to the trail views\, we will also have the opportunity to explore the park’s native plant garden! \nThis hike will be offered in both English and Spanish. | Esta caminata se ofrecerá en inglés y español. \nDate: Saturday\, March 2\nCheck-in time: 10:00 AM\nDuration: 2 hours \n \nMeeting Location: We will meet in front of the Ranger Station at Otay Lakes County Park located at 2270 Wueste Road\, Chula Vista\, CA 91915. Look for the large flag with the Trail to Bay Challenge logo! \nDriving directions: Take 805 South to the Olympic Parkway exit. Head east on Olympic Parkway and continue for approximately 6.8 miles. Turn right onto Wueste Road and continue for approximately 2.2 miles to Otay Lakes County Park. \nSuggested parking: Parking is available within the county park. You will need to purchase a parking permit for $3 at the machine as you enter and park in the upper parking lot. There is additional parking available on the street at no cost as well as parking at the Otay Lakes Boating Ramp. If you park on the street or by the boating dock\, you will need to walk the rest of the way to join the group. \nRestrooms and Water: Restrooms are located near the Ranger Station in the center of the park. The trailhead is straight ahead of the restrooms. \nHike length: This location has about a 2-mile hike. \nProgram Supplies: Water\, sunscreen/hat\, bug repellent\, and walking shoes with proper support. \nHiking level: Moderate \nNo pets will be allowed on the hike.

We will meet at the far end of the parking lot next to the dog park. \nDriving directions: Take 125 south to the Paradise Valley Road exit. Turn right onto Elkelton Place\, then right onto Paradise Valley Road. After approximately .5 mile\, turn left onto S Worthington Street. Continue as S Worthington Street turns into Sweetwater Road. Turn left onto Bonita Road\, then take the next left onto San Miguel Road. Follow San Miguel Road for approximately .9 miles\, and then turn right onto Proctor Valley Road. Follow Proctor Valley Road for approximately .5 miles then turn left onto San Miguel Ranch Road. Continue as San Miguel Ranch Road turns into Mt Miguel Road\, then turn left onto Paseo Veracruz. Enter the parking lot for Mt San Miguel Park and make the first right. \nSuggested parking: The far end of the parking lot is located at 2335 Paseo Veracruz\, Chula Vista\, CA 91914\, near the dog park. \nRestrooms and Water: The nearest restrooms and water fountains are located at Mt San Miguel Park center of the baseball fields. \nHike lengths: This hike will lead up and around the mountain\, offering spectacular views of the surrounding city and the Sweetwater Reservoir. Participants will pick up trash around the protected space\, look for signs of native wildlife\, and learn how we can all make a difference by keeping our green spaces and waterways clean! \nDate: January 21\, 2024\nCheck-in time: 9:00 AM\nDuration: 2 hours \n \nMeeting Location: We will meet at the corner of Marina Way and W 32nd St. Look for the Living Coast canopy to catch the shuttle that will take you to the clean-up site as it is located on a refuge. \nDriving directions: Take the Bay Marina Dr. (Mile of Cars Way) exit in National City and head west. At the stoplight\, turn left onto Marina Way. \nSuggested parking: Street parking is available along Marina Way and W 32nd St. \nRestrooms and Water: There will be a portable restroom available at this location. \nProgram Supplies: Buckets\, trash bags\, gloves\, safety vests\, and grabbers will be provided.
