SUMMARY:Bug Hike at Otay Lakes County Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the Otay Lakes County Park hiking trail! We will view the Otay Lakes Reservoir from multiple viewpoints and learn about the native plants and animals thriving in this protected area. In addition to the trail’s views\, we will also have the opportunity to explore the park’s native plant garden!  \nDate: Saturday\, February 28\nTime: 10:00 – 12:00 AM\nLocation: Otay Lakes County Park \n \n\n\nMeeting Location: We will meet in front of the Ranger Station at Otay Lakes County Park\, located at 2270 Wueste Road\, Chula Vista\, CA 91915. See attached map! Look for the large flag with the Trail to Bay Challenge logo!  \n\n\nDriving directions: Take 805 South to the Olympic Parkway exit. Head east on Olympic Parkway and continue for approximately 6.8 miles. Turn right onto Wueste Road and continue for approximately 2.2 miles to Otay Lakes County Park.  \n\n\nSuggested parking: Parking is available within the county park. You will need to purchase a $3 parking permit at the machine upon entry\, then park in the upper parking lot. Additional parking is available on the street at no cost\, as well as at the Otay Lakes Boating Ramp. If you park on the street or by the boating dock\, you will need to walk the rest of the way to join the group.   \n\n\nRestrooms and Water: Restrooms are located near the Ranger Station in the center of the park. The trailhead is straight ahead from the restrooms.   \n\n\nHike length: This location offers a 2-mile hike.   \n\n\nTrail Difficulty Level: This hike is moderate due to rocky terrain and a 320-foot incline.  \n\n\nRecommended Gear: Water\, sunscreen/hat\, bug repellent\, and walking shoes with proper support.

See attached map! Look for the large flag with the Trail to Bay Challenge logo! \nDriving directions: From 805 South\, take the Bonita Road exit. Turn left onto Bonita Road and continue approximately 2.2 miles. Turn right onto Otay Lakes Road and continue approximately 1.3 miles. Turn right onto Avenida Del Rey\, then turn left onto N Rancho Del Rey Parkway. In approximately .4 mile\, the entrance to Rice Canyon Open Space Preserve will be on the right.  Suggested parking: This park offers a dirt/gravel lot with limited spaces. This lot is located at 1242 Cima Del Rey\, Chula Vista\, CA 91910 \nRestrooms and Water: This location does not offer restrooms or water\, so please plan accordingly. The closest restrooms would be in the park across the street. \nHike length: 1 mile out and back along a straight trail \nTrail Difficulty Level: Easy – The trail consists of a wide\, flat dirt path accessible to strollers and guests of all ages.

SUMMARY:Bat Hike at Sweetwater River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a beautiful sunset hike to discover the different bat species that call the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge home! We will see the distinctive view of San Miguel Mountain and learn about the native plants and animals thriving in this protected space.  \n \n\n\nMeeting Location: We will meet at the Trailhead Parking Lot at Millar Ranch Rd\, Spring Valley\, CA 92019. Look for the large flag with the Trail to Bay Challenge logo!  \n\n\nDriving directions: Take 94 East until it turns into Campo Road. Turn right onto CA-94 E/Campo Road. Turn right onto Millar Ranch Rd. The parking area will be on your right.  \n\n\nSuggested parking: Parking is available at the “Trailhead Parking Lot” (link). Additional parking is available on the street at no cost. If you park on the street\, you will need to walk a short distance to join the group. \n\nRestrooms and Water: No restrooms or water stations are available on the trail. The nearest restrooms will be in the strip mall down the street. Please plan accordingly.  \n\n\nProgram Time: 6:30-8:00 pm \n\n\nHike lengths: This hike is about 2 miles and moderate in difficulty. The trail is mostly flat but does include some rocky terrain/erosion\, some uphill portions\, and a small wooden bridge that we will cross.  \n\n\nProgram Supplies: Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes for hiking. Living Coast staff will be wearing head lamps\, but bringing a flashlight is highly recommended. Please bring water and bug protection!

Backpacks with fun activities\, including magnifying glasses and binoculars\, will be available for families to use while on the hike. \n \nCheck-in time: 11:30 am\nDuration: 30-45 Minutes \nMeeting Location: We will meet outside the front doors of the Living Coast Discovery Center located at 1000 Gunpowder Point Drive\, Chula Vista\, CA 91910. \nDriving directions: From the I5 freeway\, exit at E street and head west to the Living Coast Discovery Center parking lot. This hike location is located on a wildlife refuge\, and all visitors must park in the outer lot and take the free Living Coast Discovery Center shuttle. \nSuggested parking: This locations parking lot is located outside of a wildlife refuge. DESCRIPTION:Join us from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM at the Tijuana Estuary for our next birding hike! \nDuring this hike\, we will celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by using binoculars to search for native bird species. This event will also support the 2026 Border BioBlitz\, a community science effort to record as many species as possible along the U.S.-Mexico border. Learn more about the BioBlitz here: Border BioBlitz 2026 \n \nMeeting Location: We will be meeting outside of the Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center at 301 Caspian Wy\, Imperial Beach\, CA 91932 \nDriving Directions: Follow I-5 S to Coronado Ave in San Diego. Turn right onto Coronado Ave. Continue onto Imperial Beach Blvd. Turn left onto 3rd St. 3rd St turns left and becomes Caspian Way.
