VIP Animal Encounters

VIP (that’s you!) Animal Encounters

Add on a unique animal encounter to make your visit extra special! Pick from the following options for your next Living Coast adventure:


 Feed The Sharks & Rays!

Times Available: 10:15am and 3:00pm

First, your personal guide will take you on a backstage tour of our aquarium:

  • See where we prep all of our aquatic animal’s food
  • Get to visit our ocean invertebrates backstage touch tank
    • Touch a seastar, horn shark egg, turban snail, and a sea cucumber!
    • Learn about the daily care that is needed to keep our animals healthy at the Living Coast

Next, join your guide for a VIP Shark & Ray feeding session!

  • Learn about the different types of animals at the Living Coast
  • Ready to get UP-CLOSE? Your guide will show you how to hand feed our baby rays!

Finally, join your guide over by the shark tank!

  • Here, you will learn about the different types of sharks that we have at the Living Coast
  • Watch as they swim right up to the glass, eating the fish and squid that you & your guide throw in!

 Meet & Feed The Endangered Green Sea Turtles!

VIP Turtle Encounter

Times Availabe: 1:15pm

First, take a backstage tour of our aquarium with your personal guide:

  • See where we prep all of our aquatic animal’s food
  • Get to visit our ocean invertebrates backstage touch tank
    • Touch a seastar, horn shark egg, turban snail, and a sea cucumber!
    • Learn about the daily care that is needed to keep our animals healthy at the Living Coast

Next, head over to the Sea Turtle Lagoon!

  • Learn about the Endangered Pacific Green Sea Turtle
    • Why are they endangered? Where do they live? How big can they get? What do they eat?
    • 3 or 4 at a time, head INTO the Sea Turtle Lagoon!
      • Wave to the public on the otherside of the glass while your other party members take pictures of you
      • Be able to hear our turtles come up for air and watch them swim up to say hello

Finally, your guide will walk you through feeding our turtles:

  • Offer up your new Sea Turtle Friends some snacks and watch as they swim to gobble up some of their favorite foods
  • Take pictures of the turtles and your family members interacting with them
  • Switch out with the other members of your group so that everyone has a chance to see them up-close

 

 Meet an Owl Close-up!

 Times Available: 11:30am and 1:00pm

We’ve got four special guests for you to choose from in this adventure!

  • Tyto: our majestic barn owl
  • Jack or Hoot: adorable little screech owls
  • Black, Blue, or Boo: our active and engaging burrowing owls
  • Pico (limited availability): our impressive Great Horned Owl

Once you pick your favorite, your guide will take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of raptor row and introduce you to our birds of prey.

  • Learn each of their names and why these animals are here with us
  • Learn about their habitats and where they live in the wild
  • What do they eat? How do they eat?
    • Depending on the time of day and size of your party, you may be able to visit the ‘bird room’ where we prep their food and provide health care when needed.

Next, wait behind the scenes while your host gears up and gets your special guest ready for an introduction

  • Learn about bird handling and the equipment that we use
  • Why can’t we just let them fly away?
Finally, meet your special guest!
  • Spend some quality up-close time with the owl species of your choice
  • Learn about their adaptations and what makes an owl, an owl
  • Get some great photo-ops of you and your guests

 Meet a Hawk or Falcon up-close!

In this adventure, we have three special guests for you to choose from!


Hawkeye, our regal Red-tailed hawk!


Mariah, our adorable American Kestrel falcon!

Frightful, our beautiful Peregrine falcon!

Once you pick your favorite, your guide will take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of aptor Row and introduce you to our Birds of Prey.

  • Learn each of their names and why these animals are here with us
  • Learn about their habitats and where they live in the wild
  • What do they eat? How do they eat?
    • Depending on the time of day and size of your party, you may be able to visit the ‘Bird Room’ where we prep their food and provide health care when needed.

Next, wait behind the scenes while your host gears up and gets your special guest ready for an introduction

  • Learn about bird handling and the equipment that we use
  • Why can’t we just let them fly away?
Finally, meet your special guest!
  • Spend some quality up-close time with your chosen Bird of Prey!
  • Learn about their adaptations and what makes this species special
  • Get some great photo-ops of you and your guests

 Meet the Radical Reptiles!

The perfect experience for younger children and as a first encounter to wild animals!  Our reptiles are safe for interaction with guests of all ages.

Please pick TWO animals to meet and greet!

  • Adult Desert Tortoises: Mr. T (50yrs old) or Tank (30yrs old)
  • Baby Desert Tortoises: 3 year old cuties
  • One of our calm and friendly rosy boa snakes: Mr or Mrs. Rosy
  • Beautiful Alice, our 4.5ft long Albino King Snake
  • Fiesty Oswald (or Ozzy), our active (but friendly!) gopher snake
  • Verdi, our awesome, giant, Tropical Green Iguana.

Take a backstage tour of our prep areas with your personal guide:

  • See where we prep all of our aquatic animal’s food. It’s also where we prep salads for our tortoises and keep the snake food!
  • As a bonus, get to visit our Ocean Invertebrates backstage touch tank!
  • Check out our snake & tortoise ‘hot room’ where we house most of our snakes and the adult tortoises at night. Want to know what a snake or tortoise smells like?

Meet your special guests!

  • What makes a reptile a reptile?.
  • What does your guest like to eat? How do they eat?
  • Where do they live?
  • Find out what their skin/shell feels like!
  • Photo ops!

Each experience is a 30minute personal animal encounter. Each encounter is just $50 for a group of up to 6 people. Preregistration and prepayment (Visa or MasterCard) are required by calling the Education Department at (619) 409-5908. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

1:15pm- Sea Turtles
*Reptile Encounters have flexibility in times and are available by request
